Professional Development
We believe that great teachers are the key to student learning, so we are purposeful about providing excellent professional development. Our staff culture reflects excitement around receiving and implementing feedback, growing in content and craft, and applying consistent and effective classroom practices. Joy PD includes several key components:
Ms. Sawyer-Smith

How did Joy help prepare you to begin your teaching career? |
Ms. Cohens

How did Joy support you in furthering your education? |
INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING
Every teacher receives individualized support from their grade-specific instructional coach (elementary school) or content-specific instructional coach (middle school). Instructional coaches provide regular classroom observations, lesson plan feedback, and coaching meetings to help teachers develop their craft.
|
MONTHLY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
One day each month is set aside for professional development led by the Instructional Leadership Team. Teachers and staff engage in content-specific training, collaborative grade-level planning, and diversity and community sessions.

PLANNING TIME
Our teachers work hard for their students, and we make it a priority to secure planning time for our elementary and middle school teachers. Elementary teachers have two 45-minute planning blocks, one while their scholars are in Specials and the other while they are in Writing. Middle school teachers have a 45-minute planning block while scholars are in Specials and a 75-minute block when they are off.
|
DEPARTMENTAL PLANNING
Elementary teachers do it all - math, reading, science, social studies. We have departmental planning in place to support teachres in planning responsibilities. Elementary teacher own plans for each subject and share those plans with their team. This allows teachers to narrow their focus in lesson planning responsibilities and development and ensures cross-classroom alignment in instruction.
