What Is a Charter School Lottery?
A Fair Way to Allocate Available Seats
A charter school lottery is a fair and equitable process used to admit new students to Maureen Joy Charter School when the number of applicants exceeds the number of available seats.
Unlike traditional public schools, which typically enroll students according to geographic attendance zones, public charter schools are open to eligible students across North Carolina. When demand is greater than the number of available seats, a lottery helps ensure that applicants have an equitable opportunity for admission.

Why Is a Lottery Necessary?
At Maureen Joy Charter School, our mission is to provide a high-quality education to our students. When interest in a grade level exceeds the number of available seats, the lottery system provides a fair way to determine admission.
We work to widely announce and publicize the application period so that families interested in participating in the lottery have an opportunity to receive information and apply.
How Does the Lottery Work?
From submitting an application to accepting a seat, here is what families can expect from the enrollment lottery process.

Application
Parents or guardians must complete the online application within the established application period and submit all required documents. Maureen Joy Charter School also plans to provide two in-person enrollment assistance sessions, with dates to be announced.

Notification
Applicants will receive information about the scheduled date and time of the lottery.

Random Selection
On the day of the lottery, applicants are assigned random numbers. Those numbers are used to determine which students will be offered admission and, when necessary, the order of the waitlist. Families will be informed of the number of available seats by grade level before the lottery is conducted.

Offer & Acceptance
Families of students selected for admission will be notified and must accept the offered seat by the specified deadline.

Waitlist
Applicants who are not initially offered a seat are placed on a waitlist and may receive an offer if a seat later becomes available.

Sibling Preference
Sibling preference may be provided during the lottery process, allowing eligible siblings of currently enrolled students to receive priority consistent with the school's enrollment procedures.

Applications received after the lottery deadline will not be included in the lottery but will be added to the waitlist.
