Visual Storytelling and Filmmaking

At Maureen Joy Charter School, our Cinematography Program gives students the opportunity to explore the art and craft of visual storytelling. Through hands-on learning, students discover how to bring ideas to life using cameras, lighting, sound, and editing tools.

 

In this enrichment class, students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking—from writing scripts and planning storyboards to filming and editing their own short projects. Along the way, they develop technical skills, creativity, and collaboration as they work together to produce meaningful stories that reflect their perspectives and experiences.

 

Our goal is to help students see themselves as creators and storytellers, not just consumers of media. By blending creativity with technology, cinematography empowers students to express their voices, think critically, and gain confidence in sharing their stories with the world.

From Concept to Cut

Students explore the three essential phases of production, mastering both the creative and technical requirements of each stage.

 

  • Pre-Production: Planning and Scripting:

    • Screenwriting: Developing concepts, structuring narratives, and writing short film scripts.

    • Storyboarding: Learning to visually plan shots, camera angles, and sequence transitions.

    • Logistics: Understanding casting, location scouting, and scheduling.

  • Production: Filming and Sound:

    • Camera Operation: Mastering technical skills like focusing, exposure, composition, and utilizing different shot types (close-up, wide, medium).

    • Lighting: Learning basic three-point lighting principles to create mood and focus.

    • Sound Recording: Using external microphones and boom operation to capture high-quality, clean audio.

 
  • Post-Production: Editing and Finishing:

    • Non-Linear Editing: Using industry-standard software to assemble footage, create cuts, and manage timelines.

    • Sound Design: Layering music, sound effects, and voice-overs to enhance emotional impact.

    • Color Correction: Learning to adjust the visual look and tone of the film.
