Preparing for High School: Middle Grades (6–8)

Welcome to Middle School at Maureen Joy Charter School, where students prepare for high school and beyond! The Middle Grade Bandfor students in Grades 6 through 8, is designed to empower young adolescents as they prepare for high school and beyond. This dedicated grade band focuses on developing critical analysis, self-advocacy, and exploration of interests. Pre-High School Rigor and Independence

  • English Language Arts (ELA): Focus on literary theory, research-based argumentative writing, and public speaking.
  • Math: Pre-Algebra and Algebra I pathways for high school credit.
  • Science: Integrated science curriculum including earth, life, and physical science labs.
  • Social Studies: World history, global citizenship, and in-depth civic engagement projects.

Exploratory Enrichment & High-Interest Courses

  • Music: Band, chorus, or general music appreciation with performance opportunities.
  • STEAM: Project-Based Learning in coding, robotics, and engineering design.
  • Theater: Introduction to acting, stagecraft, and collaborative production.
  • Athletics: Opportunities to join competitive school sports teams.

Introducing the Faculty of the Middle Grade Band!

The faculty serving 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade are subject matter experts dedicated to guiding adolescents through their crucial middle school years. We offer specialized instruction in core academic areas while providing engaging elective pathways to explore student interests and talents in preparation for high school.

 

Our goal is to foster intellectual curiosity, self-advocacy, and responsible decision-making, ensuring every student is ready to excel academically and socially after graduation.

 

Middle School Highlights:

  • Specialized Instruction: All core subjects are taught by teachers with expertise in their specific content area (e.g., Algebra, World History, Life Science).

  • Elective Exploration: Our unique program enables students to rotate through and specialize in high-interest areas, such as Music, STEAM, and Theater, providing them with practical skills and exposure to potential career pathways.

  • High School Readiness: We offer counseling and academic advising designed to help students choose high school courses and establish goals for their future academic success.
