WHO WE ARE: Maureen Joy Charter School is a free K-8 public charter school located in Durham, North Carolina. Our school is tuition-free and open to the public with enrollment determined by an annual lottery. We focus on rigorous academics and fostering individual development to build our scholars into well-rounded leaders prepared for high school, college, and the world beyond.

HISTORY: Originally named Durham Community Charter School, Maureen Joy Charter School was founded in 1997 by a small group of community activists committed to providing an excellent education for all students. As one of the first charter schools in the state, Maureen Joy opened the doors of its original campus with 50 students in grades K-5.

Maureen Joy’s significant academic growth and achievement has created an increased demand for enrollment in recent years. In an effort to meet this demand and reach a larger population of children, we moved into a beautiful, renovated historic building in July 2013 in East Durham, closer geographically to the majority of our student population.

With this move, Maureen Joy now provides a high-quality educational option for new families to Joy, improves the educational program being offered to our current scholars, and serves as a catalytic force in the ongoing revitalization of Old East Durham.

In the 2017-2018 school year, we will enroll over 640 students, over 85% of whom come from low-income backgrounds. Our students primarily are African American and Latino, and we serve the third highest ESL population among charter schools in the state.
