Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members,

Thank you for seeking more information about Maureen Joy through the school report card. The annual North Carolina School Report Card offers ways for Maureen Joy’s stakeholders to learn more about our school district. The school report cards contain information about student performance, class size, attendance, school safety, instructional resources and teacher quality in our schools.

This year marks the implementation of the School Report Card grading system. Per the legislature’s direction, every school in the state is now given a letter grade such as A, B, C, D, or F that aims to concisely represent their performance based on state test results. Unfortunately, letter grades based on one standard of assessment for an entire school are woefully incomplete. Please make sure to review the other data available on our website and read our 2014 Annual Report, as you will learn much more about the school’s overall performance.

Despite our letter grade falling below our desired results, we are especially happy to see a number of measures stay strong despite growing numbers of scholars. In 2013-2014 we expanded into our new facility for the first year Maureen Joy added nearly 150 new scholars and continued to meet our growth targets. In addition, to meeting our targets we outperformed nearly every similar school in Durham County. It’s clear that our approach of great teaching, more time on task, and a safe and structured environment continues to prepare our scholars for high school, college, and the world beyond.

We look forward to partnering with you this year to provide an excellent education to your children. We encourage you to review the report card, compare it to other schools, and contact us if you have any questions.
